Tips for Cleaning Your Bathroom Sink

Your sink handles a lot of stuff, from stray hairs to pieces of food and then some. How, then, do you keep a clean sink?

It’s a smart idea to scrub your sink every couple days using a sponge, warm water and dishwashing liquid.

Did you know you can de-stain surfaces using lemon juice? Take one-half cup of powdered borax and mix it with the juice of one-half lemon. This paste can then be put on a sponge, rubbed on the stain, and rinsed off– the stain will be gone. Borax and lemon juice works well on stainless steel sinks, as well as those made of porcelain enamel.

When you see white spots on faucets, those are lime deposits and they can be removed using a paper towel soaked in vinegar. Wrap the vinegar-soaked towel around the spots, wait about 10 minutes, and then use a dry towel to buff– this should remove the lime deposits. Note: if your fixtures are brass or colored, don’t use this method as vinegar can discolor them.

Finally, many people wonder how to clean the sink drain, since it’s hard to reach down there, and, yet, it needs cleaning. Here’s a tip: take a cup of baking soda and combine it with a cup of salt and 1/4 cup cream of tartar. Put it in an airtight container. About once a month, pour half a cup of the drain cleaning mixture down the drain followed by a quart of boiling hot water. This potent cleaning solution will help unclog the drain full of soap, grease, food and debris build-up.
